Tiffany Lamp History

The article below has been written by the site owner to offer our customers a historical view of the development of Tiffany Lamps.

Tiffany Lamps; a jewel in your living room

Soldered glass shade lamps have long been known as Tiffany Lamps. Tiffany lamps were originally considered as part of the Art Nouveau movement and today a huge variety in the style of shades can be found. From the very modern to designs strongly influenced by the originals these lamps endure.

Origins of Tiffany Lamps

The first Tiffany lamp was made circa 1895. Beautiful and intricate, the lamps were handmade by skilled artisans and were never mass produced or machine made. For over a century, the design of these lamps was attributed to Louis Comfort Tiffany, who’s name has been attributed to these lamps. Recently, it has been discovered that an unrecognised single woman named Clara Driscoll was in fact the master designer behind these beautiful and precious objects. Clara lost her father at there age of 12 and was encouraged to pursue a higher education. Born on 2nd April 1881, Clara attended design school in Cleveland and worked for a local furniture maker. Later she moved to New York and attended the then new Metropolitan Museum Art School. Hired by the famous Tiffany Studios based on her artistic merit, Clara worked there for over 20 years and was the leader in the design of the lamps, windows, and other decorative objects throughout her career. Clara’s’ Tiffany lamp designs included the Wisteria, Dragonfly, Peony and from all accounts, Clara’s first, the Daffodil. These first lamp designs have set the benchmark for over a century of creative design in this style of lamp.

A Sparkling Heirloom For Your Home

Today, Tiffany lamps are ever popular. Whilst the majority produced are not made by the famed Tiffany & Co., the modern lamps still hark back to their original creators. Each lamp is still hand made and unique. Whilst mechanisation helps, each Tiffany style lamp is assembled by hand, including the soldering of each glass piece to create a one off decorative item that will be long treasured. It is the individuality, beauty and the ambiance these lamps create that makes them so desirable in the disposable world we live in. Invest in quality design and it will pay you back a thousand fold.
